What is Perchlorate and What are the Potential Effects?

• Perchlorate is a man-made anion commonly associated with the solid salts of ammonium, potassium and sodium, the most widely used of which is Ammonium Perchlorate.
• Most of the Perchlorate manufactured in the United States is used as the primary ingredient of solid rock propellant.
• Perchlorate is also used as a component in safety flares, fireworks, auto bag inflators, lubricating oils and aluminum refining.
• Perchlorate is naturally present in some fertilizers typically used in organic farming. Wastes from the manufacture and improper disposal of Perchlorate containing chemicals are increasingly being discovered in soil and water.
• There have been confirmed Perchlorate releases in at least 25 states throughout the US.
• The EPA, other federal agencies, states, water suppliers and industry are working to address Perchlorate contamination…and developing treatment technologies that can remove Perchlorate from drinking water.

NJ DEP Approved Methodology

Anion Exchange

• This is a media bed in a pressurized set of tanks that is selective for the Perchlorate ion.
• The media attracts and traps the substance in the individual media beads.
• At depletion the media is disposed of and replaced with new media.
• This is the only method installed and serviced by The Jayson Company.

Membrane Separation

• A semi-permeable membrane separates the substance from the water at the molecular5 level thereby removing it from the water source.
• It is not selective and removes the majority of the inorganic contaminants (minerals, metals, salts) from the supply.
• Very costly to apply a domestic whole house scenario.

Biological

• Biological treatment is a process that uses microorganisms to break down Perchlorate into other components.
• In this process, water is treated in a tank, using microorganisms, or in the ground, using native organisms.
• Not practical for domestic applications.
