What is Reverse Osmosis and How Does It Work?
Regular Osmosis is a special case of diffusion whereby a solvent naturally moves from an area of low concentration, through a membrane, to an area of high concentration, when no external pressure is applied.
For example, if you submerge a straw-like tube into a cup of water (with open ends), nothing happens except the tube fills with water. Now, seal one end of the tube with a semi-permeable membrane, such as a piece of fabric, where some molecules can get through the tiny holes, but for the most part, the water will not go through.
Now fill the tube with salt water, and you will see that the salt water will begin to permeate the fabric and pass though to the clean water side.
With reverse osmosis, the process is reverse; a semi-permeable membrane is used to draw the clean, pure water from the contaminated water.
